Dakota Fanning is keen to clarify that there’s no sense of competition between her and her sister Elle. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the 31-year-old actress emphasized that both sisters, aged 27 and 31, have distinctly pursued their individual careers in Hollywood.
“Not at all. We share a lot, but we are very different individuals,” Dakota stated, rejecting the notion of competitive rivalry in their careers. “Honestly, I can’t even imagine something suited for her being suitable for me. There’s no sense of competition on my end. I understand, though, that some might find that hard to believe.”
Both sisters have been in the public eye since they were children, with Dakota making her debut in I Am Sam at just seven years old, where Elle portrayed her younger self. Over the years, their careers have developed along separate paths; Dakota has balanced both independent films and larger studio releases, while Elle has emerged as a fashion icon and red carpet staple.
Now, after more than two decades, they are set to share the screen in The Nightingale, an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Kristin Hannah, which is slated for release in 2027. For Elle, collaborating with her elder sister comes naturally: “As kids, we wanted to allow each other the freedom to find our own way. Now that we are adults, it’s incredibly rewarding to work alongside one another.”
Their interview also highlighted the strong bond they share beyond the screen, offering each other career guidance and sharing fashion moments. At award shows and in editorial shoots, the Fanning sisters consistently demonstrate their supportive relationship, establishing themselves as one of Hollywood’s most nurturing sibling pairs.
